Most people first hear about wet area panels when they’re renovating a bathroom. But that’s only the start of what they can do.
These 100% waterproof PVC panels are being installed across Australian homes and commercial spaces in places you’d never expect — from shower ceilings to laundry splashbacks, kitchen feature walls to gym change rooms.
At Builders Express NSW, we’ve supplied wet area panels to homeowners, renovators, builders and commercial fitouts across Sydney and NSW for over 15 years. This guide walks through every application where wet area panels work — and a few where they don’t.
What Makes Wet Area Panels So Versatile?
Before we get into applications, here’s why they work in so many spaces:
- 100% waterproof — safe in constant contact with water
- Mould and mildew resistant — no grout means nowhere for mould to grow
- Fire retardant — meets fire safety requirements for most residential use
- Lightweight — installs on almost any surface (tiles, plaster, concrete, brick)
- Fast to install — half a day for most jobs
- DIY-friendly — cuts with standard tools, joins click together
- Wide colour range — 25 colours in stock in gloss and matte finishes
- 10-year warranty — long-term reliability
Now let’s look at where they shine.
1. Shower Enclosures
This is the most common use — and the one where wet area panels most dramatically outperform tiles.
Why panels win in showers:
- No grout lines = no mould buildup from constant moisture
- Water can’t seep through joins
- A single panel typically covers a whole shower wall — fewer weak points
- Wipe clean instead of scrubbing
Typical shower cost: 2–3 panels + trims = around $400–$700 total
Popular finishes: Marble looks (Carrara, Calacatta), stone effects (Pietra Grey, Travertine), or clean gloss white for a modern look.
2. Full Bathroom Walls
Panel the entire bathroom, not just the shower. This creates a seamless, hotel-style finish where every wall is protected from moisture and easy to clean.
Great for:
- Small bathrooms — light gloss colours make them feel bigger
- Rental property renovations — fast, cheap, low maintenance
- Family bathrooms — no grout scrubbing ever
- Ensuites — quick weekend job
Design tip: Use one colour on all walls for a seamless look, or use a marble/stone panel behind the vanity as a feature wall and gloss white on other walls.
3. Shower and Bathroom Ceilings
Bathroom ceilings get soaked in steam every time someone showers. Regular plasterboard ceilings peel, blister, and grow mould over time.
We stock dedicated ceiling panels that solve this. They:
- Install directly to existing ceilings
- Don’t absorb moisture
- Never need repainting
- Available in matching colours to your wall panels
Especially good for: Shower alcoves, steam rooms, small ensuites with poor ventilation.
4. Laundry Splashbacks
Laundries take a beating. Washing machines splash, hot water pipes drip, detergent gets everywhere. Wet area panels make ideal laundry splashbacks because they:
- Handle constant water exposure
- Wipe clean of detergent residue
- Look modern (much better than the old melamine splashbacks)
- Match your bathroom finish for a cohesive home look
Typical laundry splashback cost: 1 panel + trims = around $200–$300
5. Full Laundry Room Walls
For utility laundries, garage laundries, or high-use family laundries, going wall-to-wall with panels is smart:
- Nothing absorbs the humidity from wet clothes
- Chemical spills (bleach, detergent) wipe off
- Works over existing tiled or painted walls
- Kids and pets can splash without damaging walls
6. Kitchen Splashbacks
While glass and tile still dominate kitchen splashbacks, wet area panels are gaining ground for good reasons:
- Cheaper than glass splashbacks (roughly half the price)
- No grout lines behind stovetops
- Wide range of marble and stone looks that suit kitchen design
- DIY installation possible
Best used behind: Sinks, stovetops, coffee stations, and bar areas.
Note: For behind gas cooktops, check the fire rating of specific panels — most PVC panels are fire retardant but need to sit a required distance from open flame. Speak to us on (02) 9636 8700 for compatibility advice.
7. Kitchen Feature Walls
Full-height panels behind an island bench or on a kitchen feature wall create an instant statement — especially in marble or concrete finishes.
Pairs beautifully with:
- Solid surface benchtops
- Timber-look flooring
- Matte black tapware
8. Commercial Bathrooms
Wet area panels are increasingly specified in commercial fitouts because they:
- Install faster than tiles (less downtime for the business)
- Cost less to fit out
- Withstand heavy use better than paint or plasterboard
- Comply with fire ratings for most commercial applications
- Look consistent across multiple bathrooms in offices, gyms, medical centres
We regularly supply panels for:
- Offices — staff bathrooms and end-of-trip facilities
- Gyms and fitness studios — showers and change rooms
- Retail spaces — customer bathrooms
- Medical and dental clinics — treatment rooms needing hygienic surfaces
- Cafes and restaurants — customer bathrooms and back-of-house wet areas
9. Gym and End-of-Trip Facilities
Wet area panels are widely used in commercial gym showers and end-of-trip facilities in office buildings. Heavy use, constant moisture, and the need for easy cleaning make them ideal:
- No grout for mould to grow in busy shared showers
- Fast individual panel replacement if damaged
- Consistent look across multiple shower stalls
10. Change Rooms and Locker Areas
Sporting facilities, pool complexes and school change rooms all benefit from wet area panels:
- Handle constant humidity
- Easy to hose down for hygiene
- Withstand knocks and impacts better than plasterboard
11. Tiny Homes and Cabins
Tiny home builders love wet area panels because:
- Lightweight — critical when weight limits matter
- Fast install — reduces build time
- Cost-effective — panels a whole bathroom for under $1,000
- Waterproof without needing waterproofing membrane — saves layers and space
We supply Highlands Tiny Homes and other Australian tiny home builders directly.
12. Granny Flats and Studios
Backyard studios, granny flats and secondary dwellings often have compact wet areas where fast, waterproof, cost-effective solutions win. Wet area panels are ideal.
13. Airbnb and Rental Property Renovations
For rental properties and Airbnbs where maintenance calls need to be minimised:
- No grout to mould = fewer complaints
- Easy for cleaners to wipe down between guests
- Replaces dated tiles cheaply
- Neutral colours (Carrara, gloss white) suit any guest
14. Feature Walls in Living Spaces
Wet area panels aren’t just for wet rooms. The stone and marble finishes look stunning as:
- Lounge feature walls
- Behind bedheads
- Hallway accent walls
- Home office feature walls
- Study nooks
The advantage: they wipe clean of scuffs and marks, unlike painted plasterboard.
Where NOT to Use Wet Area Panels
To be honest — a few places where they don’t work well:
- Behind wood fireplaces or gas cooktops without safety clearance — check fire ratings and required distances
- Outdoor areas exposed to direct sunlight — UV can degrade PVC over years (use outdoor fluted decor panels instead)
- Structural walls that need reinforcement — panels don’t add structural strength
- Where tenants specifically want tiled bathrooms — market preference in some premium rentals
Everywhere else? They work.
What About Building Code Compliance?
For residential renovations replacing existing wall finishes, wet area panels are generally straightforward — no council approval typically needed.
For new builds and major renovations, panels are classified as a water-resistant surface under the National Construction Code (NCC), not a full waterproofing system. This means:
- Existing bathrooms — panels can be installed over waterproofed surfaces
- New wet areas — a compliant waterproofing membrane still needs to be applied to the wall structure before panels are fitted
Always check with your builder, plumber, or local council for specific compliance requirements.
